Illness of people leads
to unplanned and un-
expected time off work resulting in reduced
production output and service performance,
additional costs to compensate this reduction
and continued salary payment. Investigations
in various EU countries have shown that about
20% to 30% of general illness is work related
with no direct link to events like accidents at
work or industrial diseases.
Over the last decades, it has been possible
to lower the number of accidents at work
gradually by applying or introducing better
technical safety means and technologies. The
number of people employed in the traditional
industrial branches has been decreased
whereas the number of people employed in
offices or services providing branches have
been increased. For many people, the occupa-
tional exposure has changed from items
having an physical impact to mental items. |

Many companies have
implemented flexible
work time regimes. New, first of all psycho-
logical and social factors influencing people's
health and performance have become more
important.
Some keywords are:
Stress at work,
Burn-out syndrome,
Harassment at work.
Engaged, motivated people in a good state of
health and feeling comfortable at work become
a competition benefit. Thus, more and more
companies implement general health preven-
tion measures to make work healthier and on
the other side, to give health information and
to promote a health focused behaviour and
lifestyle of people. |
